JULY 2007

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

We just concluded our first-ever Half-Day Symposium at Brier Creek Country Club last Thursday, July 12 with 75 attendees. The Half-Day program was designed to enable our outlying members to make the drive to Raleigh more rewarding vs. our normal 1-hour monthly meetings. Of the 75 attendees, we were pleased to have 9 outlying attendees from Wilmington, Lake Waccamaw, Greenville, Huntersville, Wilson, Rocky Mount, and Pinehurst.

Based on feedback surveys by our attendees, the two guest speakers did a great job. Patrick Kuhse’s presentation, which offered 2 hours of CFP® Ethics CEs, was “From Prominence to Prison: Why Smart People Do Dumb Things.” He led an entertaining and informative 2 hour discussion on ethics, and as one member mentioned, “It was the best ethics training he had ever attended.” Another offered, “His points were much more useful than many of the more obvious (dry, lifeless) ethics programs that are usually offered.” If you missed the meeting you should take any chance you have to hear Patrick speak.

Our second speaker, David Lawrence, AIF®, followed Patrick with two presentations:

  • Building an Efficient Practice: A New Business Paradigm (no CEs)

  • The Financial Planning Process: An Advanced Model Using Data Retrieval and Comparison Efficiencies” (2 hours CFP CEs)

Attendee comments included, “Very informative and thought provoking. Great presentation of what could be ‘dry’ material” and “Excellent speaker with outstanding knowledge of the financial planning process and knowledge of available technology.” One interesting attendee suggestion was that FPA of the Triangle organize a one-day training session with Mr. Lawrence for support staff, etc. of interested members. There would be a  reasonable attendee charge to make such training more cost effective for smaller operations. Please let us know (administrator@fpatriangle.org) if you would have any interest such a session.

Overall the Half-Day Symposium rated well, based on surveys completed by 25 attendees.  The following 1 – 5 scale was used where 5 was Excellent and 1 was Poor.

            Average results were:

A. Overall Programming                            4.6 (25)

B. Relevance of Informatio                        4.6 (25)

C. Usefulness of Handouts                        3.9 (25)

D. Session relationship to your work        4.3 (24)

E. Time allowed for each subject                4.4 (25)

F. Networking                                                3.8 (22)

We also received many excellent ideas for the improvement of future meetings as well as many interesting future topic suggestions.

Remember that there is no August program meeting and our next meeting is the Full Day Symposium on September 19 at NC State University’s McKimmon Center. Natalie Choate will be our Keynote Speaker and will present “Estate & Distribution Planning for Retirement Benefits’ and “Making Retirement Benefits Payable to Trusts”. Visit the chapter Web site at http://www.fpatriangle.org/ for more information on the full program.

See you on September 19!

John Sleesman
President, FPA of the Triangle

LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL!
by Augustus Thompson, CFP
©, EA, President-Elect 2008
Have you noticed the excitement shared by you and your fellow FPA Chapter members? Membership is up, meeting attendance is up, volunteering is up and sponsorship is up; no wonder the level of enthusiasm shared by all is up. How can you not notice it? You might want to “check yourself,” your clients may want in on the fun. There is no Chapter without you. So, in a selfish appeal as President-Elect, I am soliciting a few good members to volunteer as a Board member or to work on a Committee. The more members to share the work load, the more fun that is had by all. So call or e-mail me (
augustus@intrex.net), or one of the other Board members (contact information is on the Chapter Web site), and ask what you can do for the Chapter.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE A CFP TO JOIN THE FPA

by Nicholas A. Nicolette, CFP®, President, April 2007
FPA is an inclusive organization. All financial service industry professionals who support an integrated approach to personal financial planning can benefit from FPA membership and are welcome in our Association. Each member has access to the same high-quality educational opportunities, both live and Web-based, as well as the latest information regarding regulatory/legislative issues that affect members, clients or the way a member conducts business.

CRUISE THE INSIDE PASSAGE

FPA’s® recently completed Member-Get-a-Member campaign with a grand prize trip to Paris demonstrates how great current FPA members are as a source for new members. Building on that success, FPA announces its latest Member-Get-a-Member promotion. One of your members and a companion could head north to Alaska in August 2008.

The member who recruits the most new members between June 1, 2007, and May 31, 2008, and a companion will be traveling north to Alaska on board a Celebrity cruise ship along the Inside Passage. Included in the prize package is round-trip airfare to the departure port of Vancouver, a stateroom with a veranda on board ship, daily on-board activities, shore excursions, and Celebrity’s five-star signature service and world-renowned cuisine.

Humpback and orca whales, bald eagles, Sitka deer and grizzly bears are some of the wildlife to be found along this beautiful part of Alaska’s coast. Cruising close to Hubbard glacier, one of FPA’s members will be able to hear Alaska’s largest tidewater glacier as sections fall into the sea. Ports of call include Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway and other storied Alaska frontier cities.

Chapters win, too! Those chapters with winning members and active Member-Get-a-Member efforts will be recognized at FPA Chapter Leaders Conference 2007. The winning chapter will have some registration costs underwritten for chapter leaders attending the conference.

Don’t miss out on the latest Member-Get-a-Member contest. It’s an adventure! Click here to refer a colleague to FPA membership.
